As a senior in high school, one of the most exciting experiences is getting your senior pictures taken. And what better backdrop than the beautiful beaches of Massachusetts? As the state’s premiere luxury senior photographer, I have some top-secret tips to share for choosing the best time to take your beach senior pictures in Massachusetts. You may be surprised at some of my thoughts!

Temperature

Temperature is a big deal when it comes to beach senior pictures. Massachusetts can have really harsh winters and hot summers. Therefore, I like to suggest to my seniors that they take their beach senior pictures in September.

Humidity

Humidity is another weather-related factor to consider when planning your beach senior pictures in Massachusetts. The humidity can be brutal in the summer, causing some to have issues with frizzy hair. However, humidity doesn’t affect everyone’s hair in the same way. This is why I always discuss hair and humidity with my clients in advance. If I know an individual will not fare well on a humid day, I will suggest we reschedule.

Greenheads and Horseflies and Bugs, Oh My!

Greenheads are annoying biting flies that won’t necessarily ruin your senior pictures, but they have the potential to drive you nuts, to say the least! In my experience, they are typically most active during July and early August. If you are deathly afraid of a greenhead attack at your senior portrait session, it’s best to avoid taking pictures at the beach during these months. If you do decide to take your photos in the summer, make sure to bring some bug spray to protect yourself from these pesky insects. In addition, I keep a large supply of bug spray in my trunk for my clients, just in case!

Weather

Weather is another important thing to think about when planning your beach senior pictures. Massachusetts can have some unpredictable weather patterns, so it’s best to choose a time of year when the weather is most stable. Late summer and early fall are ideal for beach senior pictures because the weather is usually milder, and there’s less chance of rain or storms.

Crowds

Dealing with crowds can be a real bummer when taking your beach senior pictures in Massachusetts. If you’re trying to avoid summer crowds, it’s best to take your photos on a weekday. Better yet, take your photos at sunrise! Sunrise you are guaranteed to have the beach nearly all to yourself!

The Position of the Sun is Important to Consider for Beach Senior Pictures in Massachusetts

The position of the sun at sunset changes drastically throughout the year. For my favorite lighting scenario, I slightly prefer the position of the sun at the beach (at sunset) in the summer months. However, I love the position of the sun at the beach at sunrise/mid-day during all seasons of the year!

My Final Thoughts on The Best Time for Beach Senior Pictures in Massachusetts

So, to wrap things up, choosing the right time of year to take your beach senior pictures in Massachusetts is super important! If I had to choose a specific month, I would lean toward September. This is because September hits all the nails: mild temperature, less humidity, no annoying greenheads, and the sun’s position is ideal (by my standards) at sunset.

When To Book Your Senior Pictures

If you will need your senior pictures for your yearbook, you’ll want to have them taken the summer before your senior year or the autumn of your senior year. Do keep in mind that you should contact me as SOON as possible to schedule. I recommend booking at least 4 months in advance. In other words, you should ideally have your session scheduled by April or May of your junior year. However, I personally often have clients pre-book their sessions as early as an entire year in advance. This is because they want to make sure they secure a prime spot.
