Holiday’s Winsor School Senior Portraits

I love the story of how Holiday’s senior portrait session came to be. On a Monday afternoon, I was at the library with my children. I glanced at my phone and saw that someone had scheduled a senior portrait session with me for the VERY next day, at 9:30 in the morning! I thought to myself, “they must have made a mistake, they must have been under the impression that they were booking a session on the same date but in the next month.” But no! Holiday and her parents scrambled around and came up with four gorgeous outfits for her session that was less than 24 hours away. WOW, I was floored. And not only that – they also managed to squeeze in a Zoom consultation with me that night, and a hair and makeup appointment at 7:00 AM. Honestly, I’ve possibly never been so impressed by a client!!!

Bright Senior Portraits | Taking Pictures in the Middle of the Day

Holiday’s senior portrait session took place at 9:30 AM. 9:30 AM in the summer might as well be the middle of the day. The sun has risen at 5:30 AM, and by 9:30 AM your shadow is getting closer and closer to disappearing altogether. In fact, by one hour into our session, the sun was truly directly over our heads. Bye-bye to any chance at all of back-lighting, for you photogs out there! If your heart desires this bright look, you must find a photographer who is able to shoot in a way to achieve a well-exposed photo at this tricky time of day. I’ll admit, even I had a hard time shooting at the green forest we arrived at with the sun *directly* above. It took lots of changing locations before I found a few spots I was happy with. The results, as you saw, were gorgeous. I personally love bright sunlight.

Scheduling Your Senior Pictures in Your Junior Year

If you will need your senior pictures for your yearbook, you’ll want to have them taken the summer before or fall of your senior year. Do keep in mind that you should contact me as SOON as possible to schedule. I recommend booking at least 4 months in advance. In other words, you should ideally have your session scheduled and your invoice paid by May or June of your junior year. However, I very often have clients pre-book their session as early as an entire year in advance! This is because they want to make sure they secure a prime spot. If you’re booking at the last minute and can’t get the date you want, there is an option to book a sunrise session or mid-day session. You can also add your name to my waitlist. This year (2023) my August and September dates were completely gone by early April. So, in other words… reach out ASAP!!
