Hey there, soon-to-be graduates! Winter is an often overlooked time of year for senior pictures. Weather can be chilly, and trees can be bare in certain climates. But believe it or not, you can create stunning senior portraits outdoors in the winter months. If you’re wondering what to wear to look fabulous while staying cozy at your winter senior pictures, I’ve got some fun outfit ideas just for you!
If you are new to my blog, welcome! I’m Christina Runnals, a Massachusetts senior portrait photographer specializing in photography that is light-filled and natural. I reside in Scituate, MA with my husband and two little boys. My blog is a place where I showcase all of my latest and greatest sessions! If you’d like to learn more about my senior packages and book your own senior session, head to the homepage of my website now.
Anywho, without further ado… my favorite outfit ideas for winter senior pictures!
Let’s kick things off with a classic. A slouchy sweater paired with your favorite jeans is the perfect combination of comfort and style for winter senior pictures. Go for neutral shades or soft pastels that will look amazing against the wintry backdrop. Plus, it’s super easy to move around in, so you can strike those perfect poses without any fuss.
Feeling a little fancy? Why not throw on a cozy cardigan over a long tulle skirt for your winter senior pictures? This look is both playful and elegant—just what you need for those dreamy winter shots! Choose soft, pastel colors or even a subtle pattern to make things pop. The way the tulle flows will add some lovely movement to your photos!
Winter can sometimes seem a bit gray, so why not brighten things up? A vibrant top in a bold color like bright red, sunny yellow, or electric blue will definitely make you stand out! Not only will you shine in the photos, but it’ll also showcase your sunny personality. Pair it with jeans or a cute skirt—whatever makes you feel like the superstar you are!
For those who adore classic styles, going with black and white is always a winner! A chic black top paired with white pants or a lovely skirt can create a stunning look that stands out beautifully against the golden or frosty scenery. It’s a timeless outfit that will showcase your unique personality perfectly.
How about a cozy white sweater to brighten things up? Pair it with a gorgeous winter bouquet of red and white florals for a fresh and cheerful touch. This combination feels so warm and inviting—the perfect way to bring some nature into your photos.
Want to add a sporty flair? Toss on a varsity jacket over your outfit for a casual yet cool look! This option is not only stylish but also allows you to show off your school spirit. Whether you pair it with jeans or a cute dress, you’ll be ready for some awesome shots in the chilly temps!
If you’re snapping pics around the month of December, wearing a holiday-red dress is a fun and festive choice. It adds a cheerful touch and nicely captures the Christmas spirit. You can accessorize with a cute scarf or some festive jewelry for that perfect holiday sparkle.
You really can’t go wrong with a classic cream sweater and jeans for your winter senior pictures! This combo is super stylish and effortlessly chic for winter portraits. Look for knitted textures or cable designs to keep it interesting. And don’t forget to rock some cozy winter boots to keep your toes warm 😉
How about a romantic look for Valentine’s season? A lovely purple or pink sweater matched with a long velvet skirt would be just gorgeous! Velvet absolutely screams winter style. You could even add a stunning bouquet of roses for an oh-so-chic romantic touch.
Now let’s talk accessories for your winter senior pictures!
Add a Hat!
A stylish hat will keep you warm while adding a fun element to your look—think cozy beanies, a camel colored rancher, or a chic beret.
Sunglasses to the Rescue
If the sun is bright against the sand or snow, some cute sunglasses can really jazz up your photos!
If you’re wearing a long skirt, don’t forget your winter boots—they’ll keep you warm and will be stylishly hidden underneath.
Winter senior pictures are a fantastic way to celebrate this exciting time in your life. With these outfit ideas and fun accessories, you’ll be all set to capture beautiful memories. Get excited, get bundled up, and get ready to shine bright in front of that camera! You’ve got this!
If you will need your senior pictures for your yearbook, you’ll want to have them taken not in the winter, but the summer before your senior year or the autumn of your senior year. Do keep in mind that you should contact me as SOON as possible to schedule. I recommend booking at least 4 months in advance. In other words, you should ideally have your session scheduled by April or May of your junior year. However, I often have clients pre-book their session as early as an entire YEAR in advance! This is because they want to make sure they secure a prime spot. However, if you’d like to take WINTER senior pictures, you can book your pictures by October or November.
This really depends on the look you are hoping to achieve. If you’d like a wintry beach shoot, I suggest November or March when the temperatures are likely to once in a while warm up! If you’re looking for snowy winter senior pictures, you’ll want to choose a date in January or February.
