Today, we’re going to discuss my top tips for GUY senior photos! I understand that taking senior pictures isn’t typically at the top of a guy’s to-do list; in fact, it’s probably closer to the top of your “things I don’t want to do” list. However, Mom is going to want these pictures, and I promise that someday, you’ll be grateful to have them too. My goal is to capture you in a relaxed, natural way, avoiding any cheesy poses. Not only will you be happy with the results, but you might even find that you enjoy our session together! Read on for my top tips to ensure a successful guy senior photo session.
If you are new to my blog, welcome! I’m Christina Runnals, a Massachusetts senior portrait photographer specializing in photography that is light-filled and natural. I reside in Scituate, MA with my husband and two little boys. My blog is a place where I showcase all of my latest and greatest sessions! Picking the right outfit for your guy senior photos can make all the difference! Here are some cool ideas:
A laid-back but polished look is always a winner. A casual button-down shirt paired with some nice-fitting pants strikes the right balance between comfortable and stylish. You can go for solid colors or subtle patterns—just find what feels right!
If sports have been a big part of your high school life, why not wear your athletic uniform? Whether you’re a basketball star or a football champ, showing off your team spirit can make for some amazing shots.
Are you excited about where you’re heading next? Wearing a hoodie or t-shirt from your future college can be a fun way to show off that school pride. It’s a great conversation starter, too!
Don’t stress about posing—your photographer will help you through it! Here are some friendly ideas to consider:
Hands in pockets: A classic and cool pose for guy senior photos!
Arms crossed: This can show confidence.
Walking: Capture a casual, action shot.
Look at something besides the camera: Adds a nice candid touch.
Lean on something: Find a wall or bench for support.
Sit and lean forward: This shows engagement and interest.
Your photographer will guide you, but for guy senior photos. think about switching between smiles that show your teeth and those that don’t. Be genuine and have fun with it—that’s when the best expressions happen!
Getting ready for your photo session doesn’t have to be stressful! Here are some easy tips:
Here’s a handy checklist of things to bring along for guy senior photos:
You might be wondering who to have by your side at your photo session. Here are a couple of suggestions:
I suggest keeping guy senior photos to around 40 minutes. That should give you enough time to try out different poses and outfits without feeling rushed.
Nope! Just style your hair how you normally would—it’s all about your natural look.
The location is all up to you! A local beach or an urban spot downtown can really bring your photos to life.
If you will need your senior pictures for your yearbook, you’ll want to have them taken the summer before your senior year or the autumn of your senior year. Do keep in mind that you should contact me as SOON as possible to schedule. I recommend booking at least 4 months in advance. In other words, you should ideally have your session scheduled by April or May of your junior year. However, I often have clients pre-book their session as early as an entire YEAR in advance! This is because they want to make sure they secure a prime spot.
Many of my clients ask “Which month IS a prime spot for senior pictures?” Overall, my high school senior ladies prefer late July, August, or early September for their pictures. On the other hand, I personally prefer late September or October! It’s consistently less humid, less sticky, less buggy, less chance for sudden thunderstorms, and more golden :-). If you’re booking at the last minute and can’t get the date you want, don’t worry, there is also an option to book a sunrise session or mid-day session! In addition, you should also absolutely add your name to my waitlist.
Would you like to hire Christina Runnals as your own senior portrait photographer? Then you can book your session now, or find out more about a senior portrait session with Christina Runnals Photography! You can even view all of my pricing and package options here! Hope to hear from you soon!
