Fall in New England is a beautiful time of year for a family photoshoot.  Many families are seeking out the autumn foliage that New England is famous for.  On the other hand, living on the South Shore, many of my clients are madly hoping to take beach family pictures, no matter what the season!  The Moore family, shown here, wanted just that: Marshfield beach family pictures taken in the late fall.

The changing of the seasons can make it a bit challenging to choose the perfect outfits for the beach in the fall. Here are some tips to help you pick the right clothes for your fall beach family pictures!

1. Layers are your friend!

Fall weather in New England can be unpredictable.  The beach can be especially cool and windy, particularly at this time of year.  Therefore, it’s essential to dress in layers. Start with a light sweater or cardigan over a tank top or t-shirt, and add a scarf or jacket if needed.  This way, you can adjust your outfits as the temperature changes throughout the session and stay comfortable.

2. Wear neutral colors for Marshfield beach family pictures

Neutral colors are always a safe bet for beach family pictures. They allow you to blend in with the natural surroundings, such as the sand, water and golden dunes of fall.  Choose colors like white, beige, cream, camel, khaki, dusty blue or sage green for a timeless look that won’t clash with the scenery.

3. Avoid busy patterns

While patterns can add visual interest to your outfit, it’s best to avoid busy patterns for beach family pictures. The beach is already a busy backdrop with sand, water, and waves, so it’s better to choose solid colors or subtle prints that won’t clash with the scenery. Marshfield beach family pictures are the perfect occasion to wear a neutral ensemble as a family!

4. Choose comfortable shoes… but plan on the possibility of taking them off!

Beach family pictures often involve walking on sand, so it’s important to choose comfortable shoes that you can walk in. Avoid high heels or shoes that are difficult to walk in, and opt for sandals or sneakers instead. However, be prepared to take them off for some shots.  If the water is warm enough, I highly suggest walking in the water for some of your beach family picture shots.  The closer you can get to the water, the more crashing waves that will make it into the picture, the more gorgeous your pictures will be!

5. Include textures such as chunky knit sweaters and silk skirts or scarves

Textures can add visual interest to your outfit and make it more dynamic. Consider including chunky knit sweaters, silk skirts, or scarves to add some texture and depth to your fall beach family pictures. These items can also keep you warm and comfortable while still looking stylish and chic.

Marshfield beach beach family pictures in the fall in New England can be a beautiful and memorable experience. By following these tips, you can create the perfect outfits that are both stylish and practical. Just remember to have fun and embrace the natural beauty of the beach!

For your pictures, do keep in mind that you should request your session as soon as possible. I recommend booking at least 6 months in advance for June, July, August, and September dates, and 4-5 months in advance for October dates. I often have clients book as early as a year in advance to make sure they secure a prime spot! Because we live in New England, there are only so many months to take your pictures, right!? (That is… unless you want to be wearing snowsuits in your pictures ;-). If you’re booking at the last minute and can’t get the date you want, you can first check to see if I have any Piggyback Sessions available. Another option is that you could request a sunrise session. I can sometimes make time for an early morning session while my children are still sleeping.
