Planning senior pictures at the beach in New England? You’re in the right place.

From the beaches of Massachusetts to the rocky coastline of Maine to the stunning dunes of Rhode Island, New England offers some of the most beautiful backdrops for photos. However, they also come with a few realities that Pinterest doesn’t always mention. Think wind, cooler evening temperatures, uneven sand, and changing light fast once the sun drops!

The good news? With the right outfit choices, beach senior sessions here are absolutely stunning.

Here are three quick rules I always share with my seniors before their session.

1. Bring One Elevated Statement Outfit

If you want those jaw-dropping sunset photos, bring one outfit that feels a little special.

For most seniors, this means:

• a flowy maxi dress
• a romantic sundress
• a layered chiffon dress
• or something with beautiful movement

Soft fabrics that move in the breeze photograph incredibly well at the beach and instantly elevate the final images.

If it feels slightly overdressed for the beach, it’s probably perfect for photos.

2. Add One Coastal Casual Look

This is where New England beach style really shines.

A relaxed, classic outfit always works beautifully, like:

• a cozy sweater with denim
• a linen shirt with white jeans
• a neutral tank with an oversized button-down

Even in summer, beach evenings here can get cool and breezy, and sweaters actually photograph beautifully in that coastal light. It creates that timeless Cape Cod, Ralph Lauren kind of feel that never looks dated.

3. Stick To Soft, Coastal-Friendly Colors

The beach already has a lot of texture and color, so outfits usually photograph best in softer tones.

Some of my favorites:

• cream
• soft blue
• sage
• blush
• light denim

You can absolutely wear a bold color if you love one, but choosing tones that complement the natural surroundings keeps the focus exactly where it should be – on you.
